What peroxide-free whitening strips actually are

Peroxide strips whiten with hydrogen peroxide, or carbamide peroxide, which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide on the tooth. Ours use PAP (phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid), a different whitening agent that lifts stains without the peroxide reaction linked to whitening sensitivity.

Peroxide-free doesn't always mean PAP, though. Some products use other actives, so it's worth checking what a strip whitens with, not just what it leaves out.

Why it matters in the UK

Home whitening products sold in the UK are capped at 0.1% hydrogen peroxide. PAP isn't hydrogen peroxide, so that cap doesn't apply to it. We go through the rules in is teeth whitening legal in the UK, and what peroxide itself does in hydrogen peroxide on teeth.

What's in the formula

PAP to lift stains. Hydroxyapatite, which helps to replenish the enamel surface while you whiten (more on our hydroxyapatite whitening strips). Xylitol, which helps reduce the bacteria that cause plaque build-up, bad breath and cavities. Fresh mint flavour.

The strips are dry-fit, so they grip, stay put for the full wear time and peel off clean with no residue to brush away.

Common questions

How well do they whiten?

Ours whiten with PAP, which lifts stains without peroxide: up to 6 shades whiter in 14 days, depending on the shade you start from. For the wider evidence, read does non-peroxide teeth whitening work.

What do they use instead of peroxide?

PAP (phthalimidoperoxycaproic acid), with hydroxyapatite and xylitol in the formula.

Will they make my teeth sensitive?

No. Zero sensitivity is the claim we make, and it comes from the formula. There is no peroxide in it, and peroxide is what sets off the nerve.

Are they safe for enamel?

Yes. They're enamel safe, and the hydroxyapatite in the formula helps replenish the surface enamel while you whiten.

Is PAP whitening legal in the UK?

Yes. UK rules cap hydrogen peroxide in home whitening at 0.1%, and PAP is a different ingredient. Our strips are notified as a cosmetic product in the UK. More in is teeth whitening legal in the UK.

How do I use them?

Brush, rinse with water, dry your teeth and wait a few minutes. Apply the lower strip, then the top, and leave them on for a minimum of 30 minutes. Once a day for 14 days.

Is there a guarantee?

You're covered by our 14-Day Two-Shade Guarantee. Use the strips as directed for 14 days, and if you're not at least two shades whiter, you get a full refund. See the terms.

Does peroxide free teeth whitening work?

It does when the strip carries an active that works on stain, and PAP is one: an oxidiser that breaks down the coloured compounds behind discolouration. "Peroxide free" only tells you what a product leaves out. Some peroxide-free products polish the surface or tint the teeth for a while instead, so the ingredients list is what tells you whether a strip will actually whiten. We go through each type in does non-peroxide whitening work.

What is the difference between peroxide-free and non-peroxide whitening strips?

There isn't one. Both mean the strip doesn't use hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide as its whitening agent. Neither tells you what it uses instead, which is why we name ours: PAP.

Why are home whitening products in the UK limited to 0.1% peroxide?

That's the ceiling UK cosmetics law sets for whitening products sold straight to the public, and it counts hydrogen peroxide present or released, so carbamide peroxide is caught too. Anything above 0.1% and up to 6% can only be sold to dental practitioners, with the first use in each course done by a dentist or under their direct supervision. PAP isn't hydrogen peroxide and doesn't release it, so the cap is written about a different ingredient. The detail is in our guide to the UK teeth whitening rules.

How do peroxide-free whitening strips compare with peroxide strips?

Both work on the coloured compounds behind discolouration, by different routes. Peroxide strips use hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, which in a home product is capped at 0.1%. PAP lifts stains without the peroxide reaction linked to whitening sensitivity, which is why ours are made for zero sensitivity. We put the two side by side in PAP vs peroxide.

Who are peroxide-free whitening strips best for?

Mostly people who've been put off before, by teeth that stung with peroxide strips or by strips that slid off halfway through. From what customers tell us, tea and coffee drinkers and smokers, past or present, are another big group. If sensitivity is your main worry, start with our whitening strips for sensitive teeth. They're not suitable for children under 12, and they shouldn't be used with gum disease, ulcers, exposed gums or recent oral surgery.

How long until I see a difference?

Some people see a change straight away, others after two or three uses. The full result builds over the 14-day course, up to 6 shades whiter depending on where you start. After that, 2 to 3 strips a week keeps the shade topped up.
